Herbs in the Garden

Chives in front of Lemon Balm and New Roses

I love this brief little time the year, just before the chives start to bloom.  They have that beautiful little pinkish colored bud before they open to their fringy little flowers.  I like the bluish silver cast of color of the stems too.  Here the bluish silver stems stand in a line contrasting with the pink, and playing off the bright fresh color of the Lemon Balm, aka Sweet Melissa (actually a much prettier name than lemon balm).

I planted new roses this year behind the Lemon Balm.  I'm amazed at how quickly they're taking off.

The chive has a faint oniony scent and can be used in salad and cooking.  The lemon balm has a nice lemon scent and can be used in tea and has a calming sensation.  I try to choose the roses that have the strongest fragrance for potpourri and other crafts.

This is one of my favorite spots in the garden to keep an eye on this time of year.
